Since we parked our double-decker bus and moved to custom-made sleeping pods in 2021 – the warmth and passion in our hearts have reached new levels, together with the service we offer to people experiencing homelessness.
To honour this evolution, and the 21 beds we provide at George House in Stantonbury, and our three move-on houses across Milton Keynes – we’ve changed our name from The Bus Shelter MK to simply The Shelter MK.

When we started helping street homeless people in 2018, our converted tour bus was a ready-made shelter. But dreaming up the idea of turning shipping containers into sleeping pods and a living space was only the start of where we’ve been able to take the specialist one-to-one support we offer our guests.
It took a world of intuition to know that buying an old bus once used for Robbie Williams and Rod Stewart tours would give us what we needed to open the doors of The Bus Shelter MK. Once Covid hit and we had to social distance, we had to think on our feet.
We were lucky enough to be able to take a derelict landscaping depot in Stantonbury and make it into a large communal kitchen, showers and washing machine facilities. Our Vice Chair designed the shipping containers on PowerPoint. Thankfully, an architect and a brilliant conversion company could see and translate our vision!
These facilities at George House allow us to take in nine people who are experiencing homelessness at any one time. Our team of highly practiced support workers are based on site here, and our three move-on houses are only a short drive away.
