How we support our guests

Giving the hope and stability to look to the future

We listen to every personal story, without judgement and give our guests their own space and the things they need to rest and feel safe, so they can reset. Our experienced team takes the time to treat every guest as an individual. Each one has their own support worker who offers a friendly ear and helps them figure out what’s next.

“My favourite thing about coming in every day is making sure our guests are okay.”

The Shelter MK
Support Worker

It starts with a hot shower, a cup of coffee and a hot meal.

Then a key to their own front door, clean clothes for our guests to step into, brand new bedding to sleep under and their own toiletries.  Once they’ve settled in, we contact family or a GP, and help them apply for lost ID, a bank account, benefits, a second-hand bike or computer – as well as give support to find and apply for work.

Temporary accommodation at George House

We have nine beds at George House in Stantonbury. This is where our guests come for the first few months to recover and take stock. Each person has their own support worker to help them take their next steps, food in the cupboard and the chance to connect with other guests.

Our move on houses in Milton Keynes

It can feel like a big step for our guests to go straight into independent living from George House. We have three move-on houses, with 12 beds in total, to help people get ready to move back into their own home, in their own time.

Hear from our guests

A customs clerk, a retired dentist, a courier and a reformed offender. Hear these guests’ and former guests’ stories from how they became homeless to how we worked with them to change their lives for the better.

Hear from our team

Our support workers, based at George House, share their experiences of life at The Shelter MK and of working closely with our guests when they first join us, all the way through their time with us – and once they move on.

Hear from our partners

We’re very fortunate to have a wealth of support from organisations and businesses in Milton Keynes. From window cleaners and sanitary bin collectors to providers of recycled laptops and bikes to help guests as they find work.
